We are ‘ferry happy’ to announce that Monkey Haven has been named as one of Red Funnel’s Charities of the Year 2020 – and this is only possible due to an amazing act of kindness by another Isle of Wight charity.
Isle of Wight Independent Life Boats were originally awarded the title, following a vote by Red Funnel employees last year. However the Life Boat team are not able to operate fully, due to the restrictions imposed on them by the coronavirus crisis, and so made the decision to pass their crown onto the runners-up – that’s Monkey Haven and Daisy Chains IW, a charity that raises money for very unwell children.
All the funds that Red Funnel raise over the coming year, during their many charity events, will now be split equally between Monkey Haven and Daisy Chains IW.
Don Walser, Founder of Monkey Haven, thanked Red Funnel and the Life Boats team.
“We are so touched and blown away by this incredible gesture. All our supporters know that we’re struggling right now because all of our income comes from admissions to Monkey Haven. As a charity, this income is essential for us to run our animal sanctuary, and care for our gorgeous rescued animals,” he says.
“Sadly, along with so many other businesses, we’ve been forced to shut in recent weeks, at what would be our peak time. Meanwhile the bills keep piling up for the animals’ vet bills, food, heating and ongoing care. Our supporters have been magnificent but we’re still at breaking point and worried about getting through the Winter. These have been dark days – but hopefully the sun is finally starting to shine again. A huge thank you to Red Funnel and the Life Boat team!”
We look forward to sharing more news on this exciting partnership over the coming year.
