At Monkey Haven: Come and meet Kookie the Kookaburra – tell him a joke, and if it’s good enough, he’ll respond with his characteristic call, that sounds like someone laughing! If you do make him laugh, please share the joke with us on Twitter!

The lowdown: The laughing kookaburra is the largest member of the Kingfisher family. Originally found in the woods of Australia, they can now also be found in New Zealand and Tasmania.

Diet: Small mammals, young birds and snakes (yikes!)

Feathery facts:

  • Kookaburras are noisy in the morning, giving them the nickname of ‘the Bushman’s alarm clock’.
  • They laugh to mark their territory.
  • The chicks are born blind and naked – it takes weeks before they grow feathers.
  • They live for 15-20 years.
